Hearing from Ashleigh for Learning Disability Work Week!

Ashleigh started out with a work placement at ELITE Paper Solutions, arranged by the Engage to Change Project and is now a key part within our team.

He has now been working for us for over a year developing his skills and confidence. Working well within our team, Ashleigh has become a vital staff member within our Scanning Department, and has organised several successful contracts from external organisations.

“Time management was always a big thing for me, i was always very bad at managing time. But since working here my time management is a lot better, as we have to keep to our time schedule within our contract to ensure we’re on time.”

See below clip of Ashleigh talking about his time at ELITE;

6% of adults with a learning disability known to their local authority in England are in paid work (NHS Digital 2018).

4.2% of adults with a learning disability were in employment in Scotland in 2018 (SCLD 2018).

The Welsh government does not publish data on how many people with a learning disability in Wales are in paid work. However, the Labour Force Survey (LFS) provides data on the economic activity of people in Wales aged 16-64 who have a disability according to the Equality Act 2010 definition of disability. The LFS found that 47.3% of adults with a disability in Wales were employed in 2018, compared to 80.6% of people who were not disabled (StatsWales 2019).

It is vital that employers help to improve these statistics, and to make the most of the talents disabled people can bring to the workplace.

Have you considered becoming Disability Confident?

Disability Confident organisations play a leading role in changing attitudes for the better. They’re changing behaviour and cultures in their own businesses, networks and communities, and reaping the benefits of inclusive recruitment practices.

The scheme helps employers recruit and retain great people, and:

  • draw from the widest possible pool of talent
  • secure high quality staff who are skilled, loyal and hard working
  • improve employee morale and commitment by demonstrating that you treat all employees fairly

It also helps customers and other businesses identify those employers who are committed to equality in the workplace.
